Creativity with a Stench

SCOOTER LaFORGE
What I love about the art and fashion world, is that no matter what your lifestyle or persuasion may be, most likely there is something out there that appeals to our tastes and interest. A great many artist (I won't say names) have chosen to create pieces they know will appeal to the masses all to make money and avoid the harsh criticisms of the public. Some of the true artist of the world avoid and even run from this notion because they dare not want to compromise their visions. I'm not judging... I do have common sense to know that some people were just wound so tight since birth, they have no idea what thinking outside the box may entail.

Scooter LaForge happens to be a artist/designer who has decided to make his own path. His art is bold and in your face, with an essence of the abstract being dragged threw a sleazy alley. And although he has admirers ranging from 17 year old girls to 70 year old perverted men, you can certainly bet that none of them are timid.

LaForge was raised in a small and I assume closed minded town, and was often verbally abused by his peers. Having the word FAGGOT thrown his way during his adolescence I imagine was quite unbearable.. no matter if he did make a habit of wearing his mothers wigs. Scooter obviously had a plan of getting out. After high school, he moved to San Francisco but made a pit stop at The University of Arizona to get a degree in painting before arriving.

As I have said in previous articles, New York is a city that will devour you if you don't have a game plan. Often times artist of any genre will have another outlet to generate income. Having to keep a roof over his head, Scooter began making t-shirts two years ago. And like his art, Laforge's clothing can be equally just as shocking. Pulling inspiration from porn and cartoons, his creations are gritty, grungy, and often times vulgar. One shouldn't fully allow the shock value of his creations to distract you. If so, you will miss that Scooter has a very funny sense of humor. Warped... but indeed funny.

It is quite clear that this designer is doing something right. Not only does he do custom orders, but his merchandise can also be found in New York boutiques such as Patricia Field, Trash and Vaudeville, and Live Fast.
