NINH NGUYEN
THE DESIGNER WHO DESERVES TO BE SEEN AS WELL AS HEARD
I can honestly say that I have never heard of an artist wanting to give back to the community as soon as their career has started.. . That is until now... Ninh Nguyen is not only a talented designer, he is a caring one...
Like many other talents in the industry, I met Ninh on facebook. We exchanged cordial messages and decided it would be a great idea to showcase his work along with a bit of information about his life.
Although born in Paris, Ninh's family decided they wanted to be closer to their relatives. Looking forward to all the opportunities that the states could bring, at the age of nine, his family made the decision to settle in the heart of Texas.
As we go through life, we sometimes have revelations that suddenly hit us causing us to make (in most cases) drastic changes. Nguyen was on the path of having a career in the medical field, so much so that he had already received his Bachelors in Science and minor in Psychology. Realizing that the medical field wasn't his true passion, Nguyen applied to F.I.T. in New York to learn about and become a menswear designer.
"Why FIT and not the other fashion schools like Parsons, Otis and FIDM? Because FIT was the only school in the States to have its own Menswear program. The other schools you would have to take two years of Fashion Design before you can switch over for another two years of Menswear. I had no intention on designing women's clothes so FIT was an easy answer," he explains.
(And with that, Nguyen moved to New York in 2007.)
After making an incredible life changing decision, N.N. continued to stay focus with his dreams. Obviously driven, Nguyen just recently debuted his Fall 2011-12 collection during New York Fashion Week. Inspired by all units of the military, Ninh managed to create some amazing pieces without being so literal to his influences. With a price point that ranges between $120-$600, the 27 year old designer sees his demographic as men varying in age from the late twenties to early forties. Ninh also adds that although pants were made for the show, he is solely focusing on pushing shirts and outerwear currently.
The show was held at an 8000 square foot venue. Wishing that more press would have come showed, he completely understood. How often does press actually come to the shows of newcomers??? Remaining optimistic, he was pleased with the 400(+) fashionable supporters who attended.
Adding to the excitement of the show, Ninh brought in 25 pieces of artwork, made by artists from all over the world. With a silent auction being held, 100% of the proceeds were donated to the Child Education Intl and Hope For the Silent Voices (both are nonprofit organizations.

With fashion always moving at a rapid pace, I had to ask what was next now that he has one collection under his belt?
"Who knows what the future entails, but one thing for certain, is that I won't give up until I reach the end of the tunnel. Having made this collection is a great start to my career, and I do not regret anything. As one of my favorite quotes says: "No one can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending."
